Online Image Compression Services – Learnings for 2023

Web-based or online image compression services are tools that reduce the file size of an image without compromising its quality. In this post, find a list of newer image compression services, which have found a following in 2023. This post was updated in March 2024 These services allow photographers, designers, and website owners to compress images before uploading them to their website, improving the load time and overall user experience. I had published a comparison of image compression services in 2020. In 2023, a thought came to my mind: “have any new services seen the light of the day?” That question set me on the path to learning about some new image compression services, one of which (compressimage) has become one my favourites.

Online Image Compression Services, 2023 edition

Below are image compression services that were launched in 2023. In no particular order, they are as follows. a.Optify: This is a premium service, offering a 14 day free trial and this service was launched in Feb 2023. b. bulkimagecompressor: This started as a personal project for the developer, (@yakishif) and appears to compress the images quite rapidly. This free service can compress PNG, JPG, JPEG, BMP images. c. compressimage.io: This is my personal favourite of the lot. The image compression happens in the browser itself, and the images can be uploaded / downloaded in bulk. Compression ratios and quality is quite good. d. shrink.media: This is a freemium service, and offers a credit based system. You can store images on their servers. They offer web based service as well as iOs and android apps.

Types of Image Resizing Software

• • Web-based: Web-based image compression services are available online and can be used to compress images without having to install any software. Some popular web-based image compression services include TinyPNG, Kraken, and Optimizilla.

• • Terminal-based: Terminal-based image compression services are available for use on command-line interfaces (CLIs). These services are typically used by developers and system administrators. Some popular terminal-based image compression services include ImageOptim and PNGCrush.

• • SaaS via API: SaaS (Software as a Service) image compression services are available through APIs (Application Programming Interfaces). These services can be used to compress images from within other applications. Some popular SaaS image compression services include Cloudinary and ImageKit.

• • Desktop and mobile applications: Desktop and mobile applications are available for image compression. These applications can be used to compress images without having to connect to the internet. Some popular desktop and mobile image compression applications include ImageOptim, GIMP, and Photoshop.
