This post is titled the Rise of AI Writing Apps- 2024 Edition for a reason. In February 2021, I published on Medium a post titled, “The Rise of AI Writing Tools”. In that post, I asked the fundamental question: “Are these AI writing and content tools here to stay?” This post was updated on 24 Feb 2024.

Introduction

In this post, we will explore the rise of AI or Artificial Intelligence-based writing tools and the impact they have had on content creation and marketing. We will examine some of the most popular AI tools. In mid-2023, we will briefly weigh the pros and cons of each. We will discuss the challenges that these generative AI tools pose and the potential risks associated with relying on them. Finally, we will take a look at the importance of plagiarism checking, copyrights, as well as the explosion of books and content, which have been generated using these tools but have not been checked for accuracy.

History of AI writing tools

AI writing tools are computer programs that are designed to assist in the creation of content. These tools have been around since the 1950s, when the first AI programs were developed to help automate certain writing tasks. Today, AI writing tools are becoming increasingly important in content creation, as they can help to streamline the process and make it more efficient. They can also help to improve the accuracy and quality of the content that is produced. In February of 2021, I published a post on Medium titled “The Rise of AI-Powered Writing Apps.” I was amazed that since 2020, a lot of AI writing tools have hit the market. It may seem difficult to believe that I wrote this post only two and a half years ago. Because at the time of publishing this post, many well-known AI Writing tools had not hit the market yet. These include NotionAI, chatGPT, google Bard google gemini, YouBot, and a host of AI “Chat” tools had not hit the market. There has been an explosion of generative tools in the past year and a half. Therefore in this post, let us try and answer that question one more time, with a slight twist.

The Links to websites and apps mentioned in this post are listed at the end of this post.

Is the Rise of AI Writing Apps for real?

As early as August 2020, I had written a post about Kafka AI and a sample post about top 10 movies for dogs on my Author website and blog. Some of the tools that I had catalogued at that time by looking up sites such as BetaList, ProductHunt, posts on Twitter, TechCrunch, IndieHackers ,and Y Combinator’s Hacker News. On these sites, I came across Copysmith, WriteSonic, Quillbot, Headline, WriteMe.ai, Nichesss, Snazzy.Ai.Some of these I ended up subscribing to, in particular Nichesss. I shall talk about in the next section. Deal aggregator sites like AppSumo and Dealify have discounted deals on SaaS (Software as a Service) applications. Many of the deals are for AI writing tools. Most common features offered include:

Some Applications or use cases of AI Writing

Artificial Intelligence based writing software is the next frontier for content marketing. The emergence of these tools has not only contributed to the efficiency of content creation but also cost reduction. These tools have been mainly popular in the following fields:

• Healthcare

• News and magazine articles

• Legal documents

• Academic papers

• Medical reports

• Technical documents

Software like Quill is being used by a number of companies to assist in writing content for their websites and blogs. Artificial intelligence based writing software can be used to generate content such as website copy, blog posts and more. These tools are useful for agencies who need large amounts of content on a regular basis. They can also work well within the marketing department who needs content creators to work on multiple projects at the same time.

– Creating the structure for a blog post – Rewriting of paragraphs – Suggesting titles for blog posts – Creating the outline for a blog – Plagiarism checking – Short-form and long-form blog post product reviews. Some tools claim that their tools offer up to 70 different variations of writing! Having such tools is great to have. Provided one really can find their way around these different options. The other challenge I noticed was that only a handful of them offer AI tools in Indian languages. For me, this aspect matters a lot. We shall address that in a subsequent section.

AI Writing tools I have used in 2023

The number of AI-generated writing tools and apps has exploded since my February 2021 post. I have excluded the apps or sites I had mentioned in that post. Even then, the list of options in this post is rather long. When I wrote the previous post, I was testing some of the AI writing tools. Two and a half years later, I have subscriptions for seven or eight different services. In this post, I will largely talk about them because these are the tools which I have used first-hand. These include, in no specific order, Nichess, AISEO, Rytr, Storychief, Frase, Writerzen, and Content Studio. Note that these are paid subscriptions. Some of the published or planned content on this site has either been modified or adapted using the above tools. By that, I mean the part of the content has been either generated, ideated, or fine-tuned using such AI writing tools. I am very open about the use of AI in content creation. As an example, I used ChatGPT for voice transcribing and for helping with the outline for the outline for this post. Zoho Docs checked the first draft for grammar and structure. But I am digressing here. So, let us move on to the next section, a deep dive into AI writing tools.

The Need for Human Touch

While all these AI tools offer a significant boost in productivity and efficiency, they still require a human touch to ensure the content is authentic, compelling, and in tune with the brand voice and message. They’re not replacements for human writers, but rather valuable tools that can help speed up the writing process and generate ideas. It’s important to note that AI-generated content is not always perfect and may require some human editing and refinement before publishing. Which brings us to the next section of this post- Writing tools.

Polishing the AI generated content for production using Writing Tools

The rise of AI writing apps has supposedly transformed the content creation process. to complement the generated content, there are AI writing tools. Alongside these AI writing tools, it’s worth mentioning a few complementary tools that can aid in polishing the content: Grammarly checks your writing for grammar, spelling, and punctuation errors, as well as provides suggestions for improving your writing style. Hemingway Editor helps you simplify your writing by highlighting complex sentences, passive voice, and adverbs. ProWritingAid analyses your writing for style, grammar, and readability, and provides suggestions for improvement. Ginger Software offers grammar and spelling checking, sentence rephrasing, and translations in multiple languages. Wordtune is an app that uses AI to suggest alternative phrasings for your writing, to help you communicate more effectively. Other noteworthy mentions include Ink App, Copywritely, and Zoho Writer. I have written about Zoho Writer on my author site, and you can read it by clicking here. It is also a sheer coincidence that I am using Zoho Writer for drafting this blog post. (Not really, trying to bring a ‘method to madness’ in my writing workflow, and I like it’s functionality and interface.

With the introduction of Co-Pilot in Microsoft Office Documents, there will be one more option. Tasks such as writing, formatting and fine-tuning suggestions within the Word Window would be interesting. However, this is likely to pose a strong competition to some of the above tools.

Conclusion: The Rise of AI Writing Apps and the Way Forward

To sum it up, AI writers are revolutionizing the way we approach content creation. By leveraging the power of machine learning and natural language processing, these tools can produce content rapidly, efficiently, and at scale. However, it’s essential to remember that these tools, while impressive, don’t replace human creativity. They are meant to augment human capabilities and free up time for strategic and creative thinking. For blog posts, social media updates, product descriptions, and beyond AI-powered tools are worth considering. However, always ensure the content aligns with your brand voice and resonates with your target audience. After all, the power of content lies in its ability to connect and engage.

Extra: How AI writing tools improve writing efficiency

AI writing tools are computer programs that are designed to assist in the creation of content. These tools have been around since the 1950s, when the first AI programs were developed to help automate certain writing tasks. Today, AI writing tools are becoming increasingly important in content creation, as they can help to streamline the process and make it more efficient. They can also help to improve the accuracy and quality of the content that is produced. AI writing tools have revolutionized the way people write, allowing for improved writing efficiency. Examples of AI writing tools that improve writing efficiency include grammar and spell checkers, automated summation tools, and AI-powered writing assistants. These tools help to reduce the time it takes to write and edit, as well as improve the quality of the writing. The benefits of improved writing efficiency include more time for creativity, improved accuracy, and increased productivity.

Examples of AI writing tools include Grammarly, which offers automated grammar and spell checking, and Quillbot, which provides automated rewriting and paraphrasing. They use natural language processing and machine learning algorithms (or programs) for this purpose. The benefits of improved writing efficiency are numerous, including increased productivity, fewer errors, and improved accuracy. With AI writing tools, writers can produce high-quality content quickly and easily.

Benefits of AI Assitants for writing efficiency

AI-powered grammar and spell checkers can quickly identify and correct errors, while AI-driven summation tools can quickly condense lengthy documents into concise summaries. Additionally, AI-driven content generators can create entire articles from scratch, allowing us to quickly generate content without needing to start from scratch. The benefits of increased productivity are clear: we can create more content in less time, allowing us to focus on other areas of our work.

Summing it up: Are AI writing tools a writer’s friend or foe?

AI writing assistants can be used in a wide variety of tasks. They can be used to aid in the creation of content within a specific topic or niche or they can be used to generate all kinds of content for clients within digital agencies. These tools are not a replacement for the human copywriter, but they do help make their job easier. They use AI to provide assistance with writer’s block and at scaling content ideas.
